Synology NAS and MacOS: which file services protocol to use?

A Synology DiskStation supports different file services. It's difficult to know which one to choose from when using MacOS. 

Before Mavericks AFP was the goto protocol, but starting from Mavericks SMB is the right protocol to use. 

I use SMB3 on MacOS Sierra.
